Protecting Wylfa’s resident Choughs

Wylfa site is proud to host a long‑standing pair of Choughs – an iconic Welsh bird known for its glossy black plumage, bright red bill and legs, and unmistakable “chee‑ow” call.

Over 17 years, this pair has successfully raised at least 14 chicks and become a favourite among local birdwatchers and the RSPB. As a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Choughs receive the highest level of legal protection, so we carefully plan and monitor work to avoid disturbance throughout the breeding season.

Chough facts:

• Wales hosts 79% of the UK’s Chough population (236 breeding pairs)
• 40 pairs are found on Anglesey
• Wylfa’s pair is among the most successful in North Wales.
