Berkeley hosts next generation environmental regulators

A dedicated training day for 11 developing nuclear regulators from the Environment Agency focused on the realities of nuclear decommissioning. The insightful visit was designed to familiarise attendees with the unique challenges and regulatory considerations involved in safely dismantling and restoring a first-generation nuclear facility. 

The day included a rich mix of presentations, discussions and site tours. Topics covered included the site’s decommissioning progress since the end of generation, the current strategy and priorities. The training also focussed on the retrieval and safe packaging of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), the management of Low Level Waste (LLW), radioactive discharges to air and water and the techniques used for decontamination and dismantling.
