Vice Chair
Councillor Steven Chandler JP MSc FSRP CRadP
I have been a member of the Berkeley site stakeholder group for about eight years and vice chair for the last four. I represent Hamfallow parish council which incorporates the Berkeley site. I have been a councillor for over 20 years and was asked to serve by my parish council as I have a significant background in the nuclear sector. I was the head of nuclear regulation for the Environment Agency and head of radioactive waste policy at the Department of Energy and Climate Change before retiring in 2014.
I believe that the safe decommissioning of our nuclear legacy at Berkeley and the site’s return to alternative uses is an important priority for the local community. It is our job on the site stakeholder group to hold Magnox, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the regulators to account on behalf of our communities and to ensure that they are delivering outcomes that will enhance our environment.
I also serve as a local magistrate and am a lay minister at the church of St Mary’s in Berkeley. I make perry from local pears and I regularly seek parishioner’s opinions at my local pub, The Salmon!
