Hinkley Point B site
Hinkley Point B sits next to Hinkley Point A and is located on the Somerset coast in the Southwest of England.
It holds the distinction of being the first advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) site to generate electricity to the grid in the UK back in February 1976. When its two reactors finished generating in the summer of 2022, Hinkley Point B was the most productive nuclear power station the UK has ever had. In that time, it produced enough electricity to meet the needs of every home in the Southwest for 33 years.
Teams at the site started to remove fuel from the reactors in September 2022 and completed that work in November 2025. The site was the second AGR in the UK to be declared fuel free following Hunterston B, achieving this status in January 2026.
The Office for Nuclear Regulation granted consent for Hinkley Point B’s decommissioning under the Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning) Regulations in October 2025, and the site’s decommissioning phase began in April 2026.
The site transferred to Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) on 1 October 2026.
